Helsinki Arson Attack

A fire in the centre of the city of Helsinki, Finland, on Friday evening destroyed the "Makasiinit" - disused railway warehouses on which demolition work was due to begin on Monday. The police suspect arson, as the fire spread so quickly (according to press reports, the structures burned down within the space of an hour), but have not so far given details.

The fire was taken under control, but firefighting work still continued on Saturday morning. There are more photos here.

In an earlier incident on May Day Eve, a group of young people, mostly anti-globalization protestors, lit fires in the vicinity of the warehouses, and threw stones and bottles at police.
