September 6

Today is the anniversary of the proclamation of the independent Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, though the day has passed without many people even noticing, such is the world's evident desire to let Chechen independence be forgotten. Yet, as some European politicians have none the less noted, the roots of the Georgian crisis lie in what happened in Chechnya seven or eight years ago, when similar large-scale violence was directed by Moscow's armies against the civilian population of a small state, and international reaction was either muted or inadequate.
